A bridge too far for Cracknell & Romero…

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Sad news, the Cracknell and Romero tandem record challenge ended yesterday (Tuesday 4th August) at Johnstonebridge, north of Lockerbie and just south of the Beattock Summit in Scotland. I’ve driven up and over Beattock many times back in the days when I made an annual pilrimage to watch rugby at Murrayfield with David C., Alan McK. and Dennis S. It looked bleak and rugged enough from a car so cycling up it would be no mean feat especially after 500 miles in the saddle and another 350 or so to go! (more…)

Land’s End to John O’Groats in 50 hours to break the tandem ride record - can Cracknell and Romero do it? They started this morning and to claim the record need to cycle at an average speed of around 18 mph!

Most end-to-enders pick the scenic route, well away from the perils of major roads. This pair need the most direct route to keep the mileage to a minimum of 850′ish. They’ve not put in many hours training together, which I would have thought an essential for tandem riding. And here’s hoping that it doesn’t rain, I’m told that tandems are the devil to control in the wet.

So it it’s not going to be a pleasant pootle in the country. Best of luck to them. I might get over to the A449 near Kiddrminster this evening and give them a cheer of encouragement as they cycle through.
