It’s not good news trying to cycle on two skinny wheels in the snow so I haven’t even tried. In fact, when the snow hit I was enjoying the sunshine in Rome -sans bike! The Romans are wedded to the internal combustion engine so there are more scooters than cycles on the streets. That said, they do have a bike rental scheme, similar to the one in Paris, but I didn’t see much evidence of its use.
I took a walk in the Borghese Gardens one Sunday and did spot quite a few cyclists, but more families enjoying rides on four wheel cycle buggies, some power assisted.
I spotted one cycle shop on my walks around the city. Such a tiny establishment that the previous customer has to exit the premises to make room for the next! Waiting in the street was a most elegant lady, of a certain age, who was dressed to the nines. But her bike, oh dear! It looked as if it had never seen any lubrication since the day it was bought, the chain and derailleur completely covered in orange rust. I guess there’s some kind of faded bike chic thing going on in Rome?
